Welcome to ELL!

Program Goals:

The Byron Union School District is committed to educating our English Language Learner so that they become proficient in English as quickly as possible, have academic success in the same curricular courses other students receive, and fully participate in a learning community that respects all cultures and language groups.

How is an English Learner identified?

When a student is first registered and the parent indicates on the Home Language Survey that a language other than English is the student's primary language, the student's fluency must be assessed.

How is a student with a primary language other than English assessed for fluency?

The student's fluency is assessed on the CELDT (California English Language Development Test).  If the results of the CELDT test show that the student is an English Language Learner, the student is recommended for the Structured English Immersion Program or the English Language Mainstream Program (depending on specific fluency level).  Please see Program Descriptions.

Program Descriptions:

If a student has tested as a Beginner, Early Intermediate, or Intermediate, the Structured English Immersion (SEI) Program will be recommended.  All students in this program receive daily English Language Development (ELD for at least 30 minutes by a CLAD certified (or equivalent) teacher.  Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) will be provided in all content areas so that the student has access to the core curriculum. Our district English Language Coordinator works with classroom teachers to help them modify curriculum and instructional strategies in order to best meet the needs of every student in their class at their language level.

If a student has tested as having a level of Early Advanced or Advance, the English Language Mainstream Program is recommended.  All students in this program will receive Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) as needed in all content areas so that the students have access to core curriculum.  English Language Development standards will be provided based in the student's English language fluency by a CLAD certified teacher.
