On May 30, 2009, the Discovery Bay Lions Club sponsored the first annual Far East County Speech Contest. The event was hosted by Discovery Bay Elementary School.

Students in grades 3-5 completed a series of presentations and each student was required to give their speech 3 times throughout the day, each time with a different panel of judges.  Each presentation took place in a rotating block of three-30 minute presentations.  Students were grouped with other students from their grade level.

Each grade level determined a winner, as well as 2nd through 5th place winners.  Additionally, the school whose students acquired the most overall points was awarded a perpetual trophy to be held for the year at their site.

Speech Topics are as follows:

3rd Grade - My Hero!  Who and Why.

4th Grade - What impact did the Gold Rush have on the development of California?

5th Grade - Do you feel that the influence of immigrants to the United States affected the growth of the country?  Yes or No?

Our Kids, Our Schools, Our Community.  We go hand in hand.
